Markets and customers
The need to Standardise and control color at every stage of production has taken Alwan and its unique color management software into a wide range of markets. The company has identified three market segments for its products:
  1. Printers (CMYK Optimizer Print, Print Gold and Print Platinum editions)
  2. Photographers and publishers (CMYK Optimizer Photo and Publish editions)
  3. OEMs (bundles or integration of above products)
About 60 per cent of its customers are web offset houses, with the remainder split between newspapers, gravure, sheet-fed and publishers. However, the company expects the percentage of publishers, newspapers and sheet-fed clients to grow significantly during 2007 and 2008. Customers are currently based in France, UK, Germany, Italy Benelux, Scandinavia & US, and range from small firms to international corporations. In France projects have been carried out for Quebecor, Maury, SEGO, Le Figaro… while in the UK names include BBC, IPC, News International, Readers Digest …

Alwan's CMYK Optimizer product family has become the defacto standard for more than 20 major newspapers publishers worldwide, including Le Figaro and IPS (France), BDU (Netherlands), News International and the Guardian (UK) and numerous publications in Italy: Mattino di Napoli, Messaggero di Roma, Gazzettino di Venezia, Libero, Il Foglio, Il Giornale, Repubblica, and La Gazzetta di Mantova.

Neografa, a division of Borgis, is the second largest publisher in the Czech Republic and produces the daily newspaper Pravo. This customer is using Alwan CMYK Optimizer to efficiently and accurately convert advertising for ISO-coated to ISO-newspaper color space.

News International Newspapers (NI) in the UK has chosen Alwan Color Expertise to provide color management system for all of its coldset newspaper products in preparation for the commissioning of their new MAN presses. The first triple width press was installed in early 2007.

Alwan's CMYK Optimizer software was the perfect match for NI's requirement to manage print quality during the changeover between the old and new presses. Steve Smith, Publishing Development Manager at NI, comments: "We will introduce ISO standard printing on our new presses and this requires a change in our reprographic specification. However, we want the changeover to be as easy as possible for our advertising suppliers, and avoid multiple repro/transmission charges. By accepting a single ISO specification advertisement that is accurately color managed by Alwan CMYK Optimizer we found a solution. This will enable us to maintain accurate print quality on our older presses, with no disruption in productivity or quality of service to our clients, during the transitional period."
