Static vs Dynamic DVLP

Summary
All Printers experience PDF files with multiple images and pages in different color spaces including multiple CMYK spaces within the same PDF. Over more, not only images and pages have different CMYK spaces defined, but they also have different TAC (total area or ink coverage) values which greatly affect printing conditions a as well as printed densities and contrast. According to several surveys done by print federations, excessive TAC is the first reason of printability issues in the pressroom. These printability issues are the cause of long make-readies, ink set-off, paper wrinkling and paper brake on web presses. This report is the first of a series which will be investigating the different technologies and solutions used today to overcome printability and color matching issues.

The purpose of this test is to compare the TAC limiting capabilities of conventional Static DeviceLink profiles used on a color server or a RIP, with that of Dynamic DeviceLink profiles, when processing PDF documents. This test will also investigate the corresponding impact of TAC modification on print contrast for images having different dynamic range and contrast.

Profils de liaison Statiques vs Dynamiques

Résumé
Tous les imprimeurs ont à gérer des PDF contenant de nombreuses images et pages avec, au sein dʼun même PDF, des espaces colorimétriques CMJN différents. De plus, non seulement les espaces CMJN des images et des pages sont définis différemment, mais leurs valeurs de surface dʼencrage maximale (TAC) diffèrent aussi. Ceci affecte les conditions dʼimpression de même que les densités et le contraste dʼimpression. Selon différentes enquêtes effectuées par plusieurs fédérations dʼimprimeurs, la superposition dʼencrage maximale reste la première cause de problèmes dans la salle dʼimpression. Ces problèmes sont à lʼorigine de longues mises en couleurs, de maculages, de gondolage de papier, et de casse sur les rotatives. Ce rapport est le premier dʼune série de rapports qui analyseront les différentes technologies et solutions en usage aujourdʼhui pour résoudre les problèmes dʼimprimabilité et de correspondance de couleurs en salle dʼimpression.

Le but de ce test est de comparer les capacités de limitation de la superposition maximale d’encrage(TAC) des profils de liaison statiques utilisés sur un serveur couleur ou sur un RIP de CTP, avec celles de la technologie Dynamic DeviceLink de CMYK Optimizer lors du traitement des documents PDF. Ce test analysera également l’impact du changement de superposition maximale d’encrage sur le contraste d’impression pour des images qui ont des dynamiques et des contrastes différents.

Tous les imprimeurs recoivent des PDF multipages contenant de nombreuses images avec des espaces colorimétriques CMJN différents. De plus, non seulement les espaces CMJN des images et des pages sont définis différemment, mais leurs superpositions maximales d’encrage (TAC) diffèrent aussi. Ces différences provoquent des problèmes de qualité, d’imprimabilité et de mises en couleurs car ils nécessitent des ajustements des plaques ou des densités d’impression afin d’obtenir le meilleur compromis entre les différents visuels.

Ce rapport est le premier d’une série qui analysera les différentes technologies et solutions utilisées aujourd’hui pour résoudre les problèmes d’imprimabilité et de correspondance de couleurs sur la presse.

L’objectif de ce test est de comparer les performances des profils de liaisons (DVLP) Statiques conventionnels utilisés sur un serveur couleur ou sur un RIP avec les profils de liaison (DVLP) Dynamiques lors du traitement de documents PDF contenant des images, des objets et des pages incorporant plusieurs espaces colorimétriques.

RIT TT8 Evaluating Dynamic DeviceLink Profile Performance report

Summary
There are two important applications of ICC-based color management technology in the graphic arts industry. The first is the use of ICC device profile that made color portable and reproducible by means of color conversions from any source to any destination color space or color device. The second is the use of device link profile that enhances color printability and predictability. As color management technologies continue to improve, recent dynamic device links technology from Alwan Color Expertise, featuring “Dynamic Maximum Black” algorithms, claims to improve accuracy and consistency of colors with less ink consumption. This paper aims to evaluate and compare the latest Dynamic Maximum Black (Dynamic K) technology with previous Maximal Gray Component Replace (Max GCR) available in conventional device link and PCS-based color conversion methods. This paper devised a simulation method to test the color accuracy, ink usage performance, and printing stability. Results show that the Dynamic K performs as well as ICC-device profiles and Max GCR regarding color accuracy. Additionally, Dynamic K available with Alwan Dynamic DeviceLinks achieves the most amount of ink saving and best printing stability performance.

EFPG Dynamic DVLP complete report

Summary
Nowadays ICC color management is widely used. The majority of graphic industry operators use ICC profiles to achieve predictable and consistent colors. Nevertheless, ICC Device Profiles transformations do not take into consideration some printability issues. An ICC Device Profile transformation can convert a source CMYK file to another CMYK destination space for example. Input CMYK pixel values are converted to LAB using the source device profile and then the obtained LAB values are converted to destination CMYK values by means of the destination device profile. This operation can create problems on the press because specific information can be lost. For example, an original black text will be converted in four colors (CMYK) like all the others elements of the document, which will complicate registration on press. To avoid this kind of printability related problems, ICC DeviceLink Profiles (DVLPs) can be used. This is a specific type of ICC profiles, which is built by connecting/concatenating two ICC Device profiles. By using DeviceLink profiles (DVLPs) we can apply color transformations on CMYK data while paying attention to printability parameters like color purity, TAC (Total Area Coverage), black generation etc... ICC DVLPs (DeviceLink Profiles) have been used by the printing industry for some years now to repurpose files in order to adapt incoming data to the actual printing process properties and requirements. These profiles contain a predefined color transformation which s applied to all files and files content without differentiation. Recently, Dynamic DVLP technology has been introduced in the printing industry. Dynamic technology differ from Static (Conventional) DVLP technology in that it takes into account source file content prior to building the optimal DVLP needed for the defined color transformation. A Static DVLP applies the same transformation to all files whereas a Dynamic DVLP will check the content of the file and then optimizes it depending on its content. The aim of this project is to study the interest of Dynamic DVLPs compared to Static (Conventional) DVLPs. This study will try to determine if the technological advance of Dynamic profiles is real or not. The project will look at the benefit of using each type of DVLPs for printers in terms of color matching, print contrast and ink savings.

RIT TT5.0 DVLP report

Summary
This study examines the application of ICC device link profiling software to alleviate the pressroom from printability issues that are caused by the colorimetric conversions that take place in the profi le connection space (PCS). Link profiling directly links the source and destination profiles, so that the ink purity is maintained. Color conversion with link profiling (link conversion) is not as accurate colorimetrically as color conversion through the PCS (PCS conversion), but it is questionable whether the degree of inaccuracy is significant. The two conversion methods were tested using two different rendering intents and they were quantitatively and qualitatively evaluated. In terms of ∆E, there were no differences between the two conversion methods that were perceptually or quantitatively significant.

Summary
For the last ten years or so, we’ve been on a rather twisty and slightly uphill path towards standardisation in print manufacturing. The process hasn’t just been about ISO 12647, quality control and disciplined procedures. Durante los últimos diez años, la industria de las artes gráfi cas ha seguido un trayecto serpenteante y ligeramente cuesta arriba hacia la estandarización. Nel corso degli ultimi dieci anni circa si è intrapreso un percorso abbastanza complicato e leggermente diffi coltoso in direzione della standardizzazione nella produzione di stampa. Il processo non si è limitato alla norma ISO 12647, al controllo di qualità e a procedure disciplinate, ma ha mirato anche a creare attività di produzione di supporti di stampa più efficienti e quindi a rendere la stampa stessa più competitiva.
